Michael LandMichael Land's first encounter with Thames sailing barges was in the Summer of 1966 at Pin Mill Suffolk, he was just over 9 years old at the time. Michael was unaware at the time that he was witnessing their demise. After leaving school Michael joined the Merchant Navy where for the next 18 years he sailed in various vessels under the Sealink banner. During those 18 years Michael gained a keen interest in the aviation side of World War Two. This led him to an artist by the name of Robert Taylor. Robert Tayler became an artist of inspiration to Michael which lead to him on the journey to learn his craft. Michael soon joined the Guild of Aviation Artists (GAvA) and started to get more involved in art locally and nationally, having now left the Merchant Navy Michael had plenty of opportunity to join art groups and classes. Around the same time the Society of Amateur Artists was formed and Michael became a Founder Member of the SAA, he also began to exhibit his work at the Holland Art Society. Displaying his work at the Holland Art Society gave Michael a sense of direction - his aviation paintings didn't sell as expected, but his Thames Barge work did. Michael paints Thames Barge's in the same approach to his aviation work. Accuracy is of the up most importance, and it was this need for information on his new subject led him to the Society for Spritsail Barge Research, now known as the Society for Sailing Barge Research. Michael was shown some prints of John Chancellor's work at a SSBR meeting and that was the moment he knew that here was a man that painted how Michael aspired to paint like, the Robert Taylor of the marine art world, accurate and atmospheric.
