Simon Devonshire

Simon Devonshire has a particular interest in the Thames Sailing Barge. He has owned and raced Marjorie since 1993, and holds a Sailing Barge Master’s ticket. To the uninitiated, a Thames Barge is often confused with a canal boat or thought of as a lumbering and clumsy floating box. Simon tries to paint pictures that communicate something of the power and grace of the Thames Barge under sail and of her complexity and sophistication. The rig of a Thames Barge is perhaps the key to her uniqueness and distinguishes her from the many other types of flat bottomed sailing craft found around England and Europe. It is important to Simon that this is accurately rendered in his paintings, but not at the cost of atmosphere. Compared to a modern yacht, a sailing barge is a heavy displacement vessel (Marjorie weighs over 80 gross tons) with a bluff hull form. This translates in the way a barge sails, particularly when being driven hard in a good breeze of wind, and Simon tries to capture this in his paintings.

Simon is largely self-taught, and his work has been reproduced in Traditional Boats and Tall Ships and Classic Boat magazines and by Allan & Bertram in its annual Maritime Artists calendar. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists’ annual exhibitions held at the Mall Galleries every year since 2003.
